35 teenage girls are selected out of the new United States, Illea, to compete for the hand of the prince of the country. By accident, America Singer, a fierce musician who wants nothing to do with royalty, is chosen out of millions of girls. Reluctantly, she leaves her family and her boyfriend, Aspen, to stay in the royal castle and contest against 34 other beautiful girls. Maxon, the prince, encounters her the day before the competition starts, and their friendship starts humorously. Without expecting to, America slowly grasp feelings on to Prince Maxon while many of the girls leave as they are not fit for him. When America's boyfriend Aspen becomes a guard for the monarchs and they secretly start to meet, and when rebels from different sides of the country invade the castle for different reasons, struggles come between the prince and America. It's hard for America to not be jealous of the other girls, and as more and more girls are eliminated, the tension grows.
This book was one of the best dystopian, princess books, ever. The whole plot was like a petty version of the Hunger Games in a good sense. It has everything you need for a dystopian, romance novel: a hero with many flaws, a new nation that just survived a war or disaster of some sort, a love-triangle, a rebellion... One of my favorite things about this book is that like every many other protagonists, their most deepest friendship with some starts off very strange. It was obvious they would fall in love later, but the whole "I despise the prince, but I'm only here because of the food" was quite hilarious. America and Maxon only become friends because America was bitter to Maxon. Another thing I liked about the book were other competing girls besides America. Even though America was my obvious choice for who should be the winner, I loved that there was a sort of soft hatred towards the other girls because America's emotions influenced the reader's mind. For example, another princess to-be was Celeste. From the start, you realized she was going to cause problems for everyone and she resulted in being one of the antagonists for this book.
One thing I didn't like about the book was that everything in the plot was going perfectly fine until America's old boyfriend showed up. I realize that if Aspen did not turn up, the story would have been less interesting. Even though this moment was important, Aspen's appearance ruins America's feelings for Maxon. America was just about to realize that she might actually be attracted to Maxon, but as soon as that happens, BOOM! Aspen emerges out of nowhere crushing America's newfound feelings for the prince.
"I can't help it." I sighed. "One can never help being born into perfection." -America Singer
Out of all the quotes in this book, this one was my favorite because this was when America and Maxon decides to be friends. It shows off a little bit of some sass that I admire very much from any character.
I would recommend this book to people who have read the "Legend" series by Marie Lu or Veronica Roth's "Divergent." This book would be perfect for someone who just recently finished a book series and is in desperate need for a new adventure. I would give this book 4 out of 5. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
